Luis Rubiales, until now president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and suspended for 90 days by FIFA, announced this Sunday through the X platform that he is resigning from his position and has also presented his resignation to continue as Vice President UEFA.

The resignation that Luis Rubiales presented this Sunday from the position of president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) will give way to the constitution of a Management Commission according to article 31.9 of the statutes and to a future call for elections.

“If the President ceases for reasons other than the conclusion of his term, the Board of Directors will constitute the Management Commission and will call elections to fill the position,” says article 31.9, which specifies that the one “who is elected will occupy the position for an equal period of time.” to the one that remains to be fulfilled by the replaced one, the rule provided for in article 23.2 of this ordinance also being applicable in this regard.

In that article, it is reflected that in the event that the period of the current mandate is not consumed, “those who occupy the vacancies will hold office for a time equal to the time remaining to be served by those replaced” and “they will not be able to stand for a new election.” until the Olympic period for which they were chosen elapses”.

This point would mean that once the Management Commission calls elections, the person chosen for the position of president would be in charge until the second half of 2024.

Since then, as stated in the Royal Decree that regulates electoral processes in sports federations, a new call for elections would be held.
